You did say that you installed the driver available on Epson's site but Epson America says that, 'The latest Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.7 driver for your Epson product is available only via Apple's Software Update.', and, in this instance, I'd take them at their word. (Although available as a separate download, it's best to install it using Software Update.) You can check the version of your scanner driver against the listing in Apple KB HT3669. I apologise for belabouring the obvious, but you have installed the latest Epson drivers, haven't you? The point of using a new user account - which is brand new with default settings - is to make sure that none of the old, incompatible, or corrupt prefs and caches in the user domain are causing the problem. Tried the laptop with 10.6.8 and ended up with the same result I did try using a different user account and got the same behavior.
